semester highlights opened the World of the Piano series with an unforgettable all-Beethoven recital featuring Sonata in C Minor Op. 13 “Pathétique,” Sonata in C Sharp minor Op. 27 No. 2 “Moonlight” and Sonata in F Minor Op. 57 “Appassionata.” Other special performances this fall included the Grammy nominated Zofo Piano Duet, performing preview pieces from their upcoming album, “ZOFOrbit: A Space Odyssey,” and the Mendelssohn Piano Trio, currently the Ensemble-in-Residence for the D.C. Embassy Series, featuring Shenandoah Conservatory Dean Michael Stepniak on viola. Shenandoah Conservatory announced its exciting new partnership with Bright Box Theatre in downtown Winchester, featuring a select number of intimate, premier performances. The first performances to debut this fall included Edge Ensemble with Terry Riley’s “In C”; the soulful, improvisational performance of the Grammy Award-winning SF Jazz Collective; and Downtown Ghosts, a seasonal concert featuring Annie Gosfield’s “Phantom Shakedown,” selections from Elliot Cole’s “Postludes,” selections from Alex Weiser’s “Subway Memories,” Stefan Weisman’s “From Frankenstein,” John Zorn’s “Dark River” and Eve Belgarian’s “Osculati Fourniture.” Shenandoah Conservatory Jazz Ensemble opened its season with “75 Years of Big Band” directed by Auxiliary Adjunct Associate Professor of Jazz and Trumpet Craig Fraedrich.
