gas-fired appliances. However, a certified gasfitter is required to inspect the work under gas permit regulations,” said Campbell.“ The ability for a sheet metal worker to now obtain Gasfitter Class B certification is a significant change the sector has advocated for over the years. This transition will now see individuals with this combined certification take responsibility for all of their own work under the gas permit regulations. The addition of Gasfitter Class B certification could also result in greater efficiencies for businesses in the residential, commercial and industrial heating and ventilation industries.”
She said the addition of the certification creates a better-educated work force for Alberta’ s heating and ventilation industry. It provides greater recognition of the knowledge, skills and abilities of the certified sheet metal worker, and helps to lower permitting, administrative and operating costs for Alberta business owners.
The push for the new certification originated with SMCAA, as members wanted to see a change either in the gas permitting or the course outline. With the interests of its members and the industry uppermost in mind, the SMCAA sought out the Alberta Sheet Metal Worker PAC / LAC( Provincial Apprenticeship Committee / Local Apprenticeship Committee) to see if they could assist in getting a resolution.
PAC / LAC spent countless hours in meetings in Calgary and Edmonton, while SAIT and NAIT also contributed as partners in this achievement. Wilma Agnew, SMCAA’ s executive director, expressed her gratitude to everyone who worked tirelessly to include the Gas B ticket in the future for sheet metal workers.“ Thank you to the sheet metal and gas PAC / LAC, Duane Sylvester of SAIT and Mike Vader of NAIT,” Agnew said.“ Your dedication to the sheet metal trade is very much appreciated.” •
