When you hear “She-Wolf” your mind probably illustrates an image of a really hairy beast that resembles a female more than other werewolves.
This is what has been put into your mind by multiple forms of media, such as werewolf movies and movies about supernatural beings. That was the case for me at least. Maybe some of you thought back to when you saw that Shakira music video for a song called “She Wolf”.
It wasn’t the typical portrayal of she-wolves, the video is sexualized and shows the transformation by changing eyes and a nearly nude Shakira dancing in a cage. Why does this representation seem unusual to how we normally see She-Wolves being portrayed?
There needs to be more female werewolves! Challenging society’s popular belief is not always promising or positive. Audiences can’t seem to get over this fear of hairy women, and the expectation of masculinity is challenged on an everyday basis, but most people just push it under the rug.
