the art & soul of love

A LL EYES WERE ON USCHI JEFFCOAT
as she glided across the stage in a navy blue gown
to accept She Magazine’s 2015 Extraordinary
Woman Art & Soul Award. Among those applauding sat one who saw more than Uschi’s beaming smile and beautiful dress. This person was
someone who watched her burn the midnight
oil while supplying her with necessary Cheez-its,
chocolate, and wine. This person was someone
who saw her talent flourish through years of hard
work, as only a fellow artist can do. This person
was also someone who knew her heart for both
art and people. This person was none other than
her doting husband and best friend, Charles.
Charles and Uschi met while volunteering for
the outreach program, Young Life. At that time,
Uschi was in college and Charles was working as
a graphic design artist. Immediately, Charles was
drawn in by how intriguing and sweet she was.
Uschi, however, steered clear of him for a while
because she thought he was much older since
he came to volunteer in his work clothes. As they
spent more time together, though, a friendship
blossomed as they started to notice each other’s compassion. After multiple movies, dinners,
and hours spent with each other, a relationship
began to develop. He would listen with fascination as she told stories about visiting her family in
Germany. Soon after they started dating, Charles
even surprised Uschi while she was visiting her
family in Germany in order to get to know them
better.
As their courtship progressed, they both realized that their love was something more than a
simple relationship. Over time, their love for each
other had become more than either of them had
ever experienced. “When I began to see Uschi’s
heart for me and those we loved,” Charles said,
“I knew she was the one.”
