OUR PROJECTS
We recently completed an award-winning , large plaza in McLean , Virginia for Macerich at its Tysons Corner Center , for which they used several of our patented Lithocrete finishes . Tysons Corner Center is the largest shopping mall in the Washington , D . C . area and is one of the top retail centers in terms of size in the United States . What makes this plaza unique is that all placed concrete and Lithocrete included a special waterproofing admixture . This formula not only helps to repel chemicals and stains , but it stops the freeze-thaw problems that typically destroy exposed concrete plazas in a very short time in these weather conditions .
Our method of using the waterproofing admixture validated through testing with CTL Group laboratory . The admixture proved more consistent than relying on the accuracy of targeting 6 % air entrainment which is the current ACI guideline . The procedure we followed with this project required more labor due to the difficulty of working with the admixture plus the additional cost of the admixture , but it fit the Shaw & Sons ’ philosophy of craftsmanship to give the owner a superior plaza in a four-season environment that will outperform the quality and durability of any other concrete plaza in the Washington D . C . region .
As you will see in the following pages , it is our commitment to build everything properly so the owner avoids future potential legal or construction problems . Regardless of the complexity of the work or the challenges of the location , we have never had a defective workmanship or personal injury claim filed against our company . And our greatest asset is to build with the highest level of quality safely during construction and retain total project safety for decades after the project is completed .
I am truly grateful to everyone at Shaw & Sons and the Owners , Architects , and Contractors who continue to believe in our company and who have included us in so many unbelievably great projects . Without them , we would not be where we are today .
We appreciate what the past has given to us and look forward to helping you in building the next decade of fine projects .
