Dear Colleagues :
Thank you for your interest in Shaw & Sons . We began in 1948 primarily as a structural concrete company . By the late 1970s we were constructing on average one tilt-up building every three weeks .
OUR HISTORY
I recall one particular occasion when my oldest brother , Gary , scheduled two tilt-up buildings to be erected on the same day . My other brother and I were carpenter foremen who also did our own rigging on lift days . We finished one building and then quickly drove to the other job site just as the jib was raised on the second crane ready to pick up all of the ( 40 ) individual 28-ton panels to complete another two-story building by the end of the same day . No time or effort was wasted . None of us knew why Gary scheduled us that way as one mistake would have been costly in crane time , but he was in charge ; it was a Friday , and he wanted the panels up . He had total confidence that it could be done , and I have to say the timing was perfect and so was the balance of the company that fine day .
This is a snapshot of what working in the field was like when I was younger . My peers and I learned how to run fast and even though we knew there were a lot easier ways to earn a living , none were nearly as satisfying and rewarding . To build properly each day leaves you tired but with an awesome feeling . To raise two entire buildings in one day truly gives a construction team a good feeling that you just achieved something in an organized , methodical fashion that few people can do , with a process timed almost to the minute .
Later in 1979 , when my older brother retired and I became an owner , we began constructing concrete , steel frame , low and high-rise buildings such as the Wells Fargo Tower ( See photo on right ), a 16-story landmark office building in the Irvine Business Complex , McDonald Douglas ’ 12 – story office tower in Long Beach , the PacBell 8-story office building in Anaheim , and the T-Mobile 12-story tower in Santa Ana .
Since the late 1980s , Shaw & Sons has focused primarily on architectural concrete , while maintaining our structural roots on numerous notable buildings throughout Southern California . Our goal in the architectural concrete market is to raise the bar so no one else could or can reach it . We strive to build with the highest quality standards as possible so an owner has something that will last a lifetime and become a true asset that will never need replacing .
Our greatest reward has always been to have an owner look at their project , 5
