Bud Hohl , an 87-year old Marine , and Vic Bakkila , a sergeant with the Costa Mesa Police and a good friend of Shaw & Sons , had a vision to create a new monument honoring our military veterans . Construction of the monument was donated by Shaw & Sons and Quickcrete , and led by Shaw & Sons owner Paul Taylor . The new memorial represents all divisions of our military with flags and plaques that honor those brave men and women who have served the United States . Both Shaw uncles , Delvin Shaw and George Allison , served in WWII and Gary Shaw served in Vietnam . All three were in the US Army and they excelled at everything . They cherished their lives from people , friends to construction . Gary ( past owner ) and George , both worked for Shaw & Sons . Delvin was the last of the “ by hand ” operating engineers and retired from Sully Miller . Each man was a great asset to their country , their families , and the construction industry , and possessed extensive knowledge about the importance of work , relationships , and living a full life . All three enjoyed everything from horses to motorcycles . They were a lot of fun to be around and like our dad , Leroy Shaw , they are greatly missed .
For Shaw & Sons , this book tells a lot about who we are , what we do , what we ’ ve learned , and from whom we learned it . We are all grateful to our valued mentors who were also our friends in construction , people such as Jim Everhart , Jack Wills , Chuck Bruce , Frenchie Balance , Howard Humphrys , Bob Ware , as well as Delvin , Elmer , and Emmett Shaw , Gary and Leroy Shaw , George Allison and Al Vick .
We know how important mentors can be to achieving success in life and we hope that we all build our projects with our own mentors in mind , giving them the respect they deserve in everything we plan and create . This will always be our goal . This is our pledge to honor them .
