Founding Dean’ s Message

The College of Medicine has been in a constant whirlwind of training our medical students, developing academic programs, fundraising, and planning for the visit of the LCME early in 2025. Those are but a few of the tasks that have occupied faculty, staff, and students most recently. Meanwhile, our team has racked up many notable accomplishments.

Associate Dean Lisa Barkley has been elected President of the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine( SAHM). It is the leading organization globally for adolescent and young adult health care professionals from all disciplines.
Dr. LaShonda Spencer was recently recognized by the LA County Commission on HIV for her work in advocacy, research, care, and treatment for HIV in women. Drew C. A. R. E. S. was recognized for its work in HIV treatment at the community level by LA County Public Health Department of HIV / STI Programs.
Congratulations to the 2024 UCLA-CDU graduating students for the many outstanding residency placements that they achieved in this round that were on Match Day 2024. Harvard, UCLA, UC Irvine, USC, the University of Chicago, University of Michigan, Kaiser Permanente, University of Texas, Weill Cornell Medical Center and Massachusetts General Hospital were amongst the places where they will continue their journey and do us very proud. Kudos to Associate Deans Daphne Calmes and Dotun Ogunyemi for their efforts.
Our first-year students in the four-year medical program have also taken to the work of pursuing opportunities available to learn and lead. At press time, twelve of them had accomplished a range of achievements, such as receiving a fellowship and stipend to attend a summer program in ophthalmology at Harvard; being a finalist in the Elsevier Clinical Challenge; training in a clinical trials program at Harbor-UCLA; a journey to Zambia in collaboration with the CIDRZ( Center for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia) to participate in infectious disease research and visit with the Rise Up program there; a biomedical research opportunity with Novartis in Cambridge, MA; participation as a student scholar in an equity program offered by the International Myeloma Foundation; participating in a cancer research training program at the University of Texas; the Nth Dimensions Summer Internship; and as a presenter at the Health Justice Student Assembly. Congratulations all.
And lastly, we remind you to attend our semi-annual faculty meeting on May 22nd, as well as Jazz at Drew on Saturday, September 21st.
