component to the retreat. It was centered on describing accreditation next steps for the 4-year medical program and a field visit by the LCME team. Dr. Barzansky’ s subject matter was The Road to Full Accreditation: Introduction to the LCME Survey Process and Timeline.
school experience thus far. They delivered valuable insights about their personal journey, an assessment of activities that are working and some that need ongoing tweaking; and requested additional clarity regarding such activities as group assignments, faculty expectations, and scheduling. They also requested time to review questions after taking an exam to know how to approach subject matter in the future.
Valecio Sarmento of the David Geffen School of Medicine took the lead in Getting Ready for the Clerkship Experience. As with the earlier panel, she stressed the importance of the course coordinator. It is best to do one clerkship for all, she noted. It is best that people in the same specialization go through the rotation together. Set the students up for success. Make your expectations clear and be a cheerleader for the students. Tracking is very critical as a way of monitoring what students are doing in the instances of makeup exams and clinical assignments.
With a detailed PowerPoint presentation as her tool, she discussed the steps leading to full accreditation for a developing medical school, described the Liaison Committee on Medical Education( LCME) expectations for a school to achieve provisional accreditation, and identified and discussed the pitfalls to avoid when preparing for an accreditation review.
The pathway to accreditation from CDU’ s vantage point was depicted in detail. The LCME visit in 2025 will consider CDU’ s preparation to receive provisional accreditation during the second year of operation, while full accreditation will be awarded with the LCME’ s evaluation of the execution of all of the clerkships implemented, the curriculum staffed for all years, and the full range of student support services available and in place by the time the first class graduates.
For the 2025 provisional site visit, there is no self-study in the review for provisional accreditation. Rather, completion of the DCI and completion of the student-managed Independent Student Analysis are key steps. The student committee analyzes survey data and independently develops a summary narrative, including areas of strength and challenges to be addressed.
The LCME site visit is used to answer questions raised by the DCI( e. g., timing issues such as whether certain events / changes mentioned in the DCI have taken place); to fill in gaps in information / collect updated information, to collect 360 ° perceptions / information from relevant stakeholder groups, and to reconcile inconsistencies between the DCI / ISA / other data sources.
The Primer and Workshop-How to Write Effective NBME Style Examination Questions was intended to alert retreat attendees about the best kinds of quality exam question preparation. It was conducted by Peter Quiros, Course Director of Foundations of Practice at UCLA’ s David Geffen School of Medicine. He presented an exercise in which attendees had to identify the most effective questions based on their structure and noted that item questions must be plausible choices, as effective interpretations of data. The question stems should be concise and not overwhelmingly negative.
