8th Annual President’ s Breakfast Highlights a Focus on Gun Violence and Mental Health

With a theme of Gun Violence in America: A Public Health Emergency, the eighth annual breakfast hosted by President David Carlisle presented an opportunity to look at the burgeoning dangers of the nationwide threat of gun violence through the lens of mental health prevention.

During his opening remarks, Dr. Carlisle took the opportunity to stress the importance of the University’ s ongoing fundraising initiatives. He accentuated the importance of the CDU Rising campaign, noting that its goal of $ 75 Million was nearly achieved, with $ 72M committed as of the date of the event. Dr. Carlisle noted that an additional $ 25M is being sought to match the state of California’ s institutional grant.
President Carlisle noted three overarching goals of the CDU Rising campaign:
• Financial support to ensure student success.
• Grow the operational support of the University for increased access to modern facilities and faculty development.
• Support for the building of the Health Professions Education Building( HPEB) that will house the new 4-Year medical school.
These activities, he noted, are all important endeavors central to the University’ s growing status as a major institution. A theme such as exploring ways to curb the epidemic of gun violence sweeping across the nation is a most timely and appropriate matter for discussion. The incidence of gun violence is a pressing and alarmingly problematic situation that requires a plan of action.
Dr. Carlisle took time to acknowledge the event’ s sponsors. They included Platinum-level sponsors Torrey Pines Bank and Alta Med; Silver Sponsors UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine and the RFP Insurance Agency; Bronze Sponsors AOE Consulting, the Tessie Cleveland Community Services Corporation, and the PULA Group.
Individual VIP Sponsors included CDU Vice President for Research and Health Affairs Dr. Jay Vadgama;
