Two cohorts into Program Year 2, the Psychiatry Residency is based in a variety of locations that offer a diverse menu of training rotations. Rancho Los Amigos is the site of both of the two-month medical residency rotations that include inpatient services and neurology. The two-month outpatient program is based at Kedren.
he three months of rotations at the Long Beach VA Hospital include substance abuse, consultation and liaison training, emergency psychiatric and in-patient psychiatric training. A two-month child and adolescent rotation is offered at UCLA ' s Resnik Neuropsychiatric Hospital.
Despite its newness, Dr. Ebrahim feels that the program is living up to what was expected when first proposed to LA County nearly four years ago. During its year and a half span of operations, the CDU Psychiatry Residency has attracted great interest. For the 2020-21 incoming class, the University received 740 applicants for 6 available slots.“ These applicants were from all over the country. They were very, very qualified.” He noted that the program is rapidly heading to status as a fully recognized and supported residency program.

And how are the medical resident cohorts performing? Dr. Barkley noted that students are doing well, considering the mandate of the University ' s mission.“ It ' s challenging to train in a place of high need, especially as part of an inaugural program. Processes don ' t always work smoothly. They have to see a high volume of patients with low resources. To insert a resident in there is a challenge and our residents have experienced that.
“ It ' s a challenge and a blessing. You have to grapple with all of these things and by navigating these systems in your training, you ' ll come out in the end as a more resilient doctor who can work in communities that are not always perfect,” Dr. Barkley added.
Regarding the effort devoted to developing the 4-year medical school, Dr. Barkley observed,“ Family Medicine helps lay the groundwork because our doctors have to train in a wide variety of specialties, including surgery, ob / gyn, pediatrics and behavioral health.” Family medicine professionals take care of people from birth to death.“ This morning I was with the residents and there was a two-year-old, a 69 year old, two 30 year olds, a 16 year old, and an 8 year old. We just see the whole gamut, she added.
