Dr. Barbara Ferrer, Director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, took the long view in Understanding Violence Through a Public Health Lens. She and her colleagues are now looking at a wider perspective of what constitutes trauma by focusing on the impact of trauma and the need to avoid re-traumatizing victims and the community at large by a close analysis of various types of violent incidents.
Racism, violence, and historic oppression have been key tools of traumatization. The impact of the oppression of native peoples through subjugation and colonization is an ingrained factor. Her solution is an approach that dismantles institutional racism. She lauded the Community Healing Center at MLK Community Hospital in providing support for healing, and justice advocacy.
2nd Annual Drs. Ruth and Ludlow Creary Lectureship Luncheon
Sen. Holly Mitchell Keynote: Strengthening the Healthcare Safety Net in Los Angeles
Before an attentive audience of medical professionals and community decision-makers, State Senator Holly Mitchell keynoted the second annual Drs. Ruth and Ludlow Creary Lectureship Luncheon. She offered a resounding endorsement of the progress that CDU has made in bridging the health care service gap in Los Angeles County.
Sen. Mitchell noted that her role as Chair of the State Senate Budget and Fiscal Review Committee offered
her the unique ability to provide fiscal resources where they are most needed. She cited her strong support of the expansion of University programs and lauded the effort to bring an independent four-year medical school to the local community.
2019 Homecoming Gala: A Party to Remember
This year ' s Homecoming Gala emphasized a fastpaced party atmosphere. Guests were entertained by the Gentlemen ' s Ensemble Band, a versatile group steeped in rhythmically tight interpretations of soulful standards, led by CDU Board of Trustees member Dr. Harding Young playing wind synthesizer, with the capability of producing the sound of a dozen instruments. Featured vocalist Vickie Love excitedly belted out a variety of familiar soul-stirring interpretations to everyone ' s delight.
Alumni Council Chairperson Dr. Adrienne Martinez welcomed the participants and thanked them for their continued support of CDU and its mission. President Dr. David Carlisle and COM Dean Dr. Deborah Prothrow-Stith thanked event Gold Sponsor The Stovall Foundation for its generous support. Guests socialized and partied into the night on a wonderful musical high note.
