S HAPING THE FUTURE FOR TEEN COSMOTOLOGIST Wreina Domingue is a fresh- man at Cristo Rey BR Franciscan High School. When Breina was younger, every day was a battle of confidence. She often found herself crying at home because of bullies at school that would gos- sip about her or because of the people that would refuse to sit next to her. She had friends that she could not truly count on or fully be herself around. “I can’t count how many times I heard a fat joke or have been called the most monstrous names because of my size,” Breina says. Growing up surrounded by negative thoughts and words that people directed at her caused her to become hate- ful and aggressive towards others. She developed the mindset of, “I’ll fight anyone who has something to say about me.” As Breina got older, she began to boldy embraced who she is as she realized that she cannot fight everyone that is against her. “At the end of the day, [their opinions] doesn’t matter. I’m living with me.” by PAIGE HATHORN Photography by TWAJOKU PHOTOGRAPHY Overcoming Opinions “When people approach me, they probably look at my weight as disgusting.” Breina says. While every- one is entitled to his or her own opinions, she does not allow that to bother her self-esteem, “I am colorful clothing and lots of fun makeup. “For the girls that don’t have that confidence find something that agrees with your body and just go from there.” Dress in whatever will make you feel like your best self. As Breina has gotten older, she has realized that there are health problems that come with being plus sized, such as shortness of breath. She also strug- gles sometimes to fit into certain clothing that she likes. “I have thought of changing my diet, not for the appearance because I love myself but mainly for health issues. It doesn’t mater how big or small you are, health effects us all and you need to take care of yourself.” Her ultimate goal is to live her life in a way that creates unity, “Why choose to tear others down so that you can imitate a happy life?” Shaping the Future for Teen Cosmotologist Her role in the “Shaping the Future” movement is im- mense. The importance of this topic is for the world to alter their focus. Taking it away from a person’s body and focus on their accomplishments. Too many times, we tend to pay attention to the wrong things. Someone can be as successful as they can be, and we will still watch their body and judge them on the BREINA “Specially crafted by God, he just added a bit more curves.” FOLLOW HER ON INSTAGRAM @leeshayyyy beautiful, she is beautiful, he is beautiful.” Soci- ety focuses too much on the outward things like skin tone, ethnicity, size and not enough on what is inside a person. “Love yourself, or no one else will,” she says. “You are who you say you are, you are who you think you are and you are who you are meant to be.” Breina is not afraid to admit to body shaming others in the past but now realizes how wrong that was. “I have body shamed plus sized girls who do not know how to take care of themselves and my judgment was definitely a defense mechanism for myself because of the way I was treated. As I’ve grown up I’ve realized that everyone is beautiful in their own way.” “Being plus-size, you need to know how to carry yourself,” Breina says. “Figure out what works for you and wear it. She encourages you to put on clothes that make you feel good. For Breina, that is size of their clothes and not the size of their hearts. Breina’s focus in this movement is to help shape the future for teen cosmotologist. Her dream is to suc- ceed in the business of cosmotology with the desire to do a little modeling on the side. She has already begun looking into different modeling opportunities around her city. Her endeavor and success is of great importance to this topic, because the fashion and beauty world is just learning how to accept plus sized girls on their team. “Love yourself, or no one else will,” she says. “You are who you say you are, you are who you think you are and you are who you are meant to be.” 35
