Despite the fact that some of Queen’s songs are now over 40 years old, there aren’t many people alive

SCIENCE CORNER
“A natural defense so far unknown”
Unfortunately, we all know how Freddie Mercury died: he passed away in 1991 at the age of 45 due to complications from AIDS. Following the moving and hugely successful Tribute Concert in 1992, Brian May (Queen’s guitarist), Roger Taylor (Queen’s drummer) and Jim Beach (Queen’s manager) set up The Mercury
Phoenix Trust (MPT) in memory of their iconic frontman. The MPT is an association that collects money for the researchagainst HIV/AIDS worldwide.
Here in Italy, with precision in Trento, a research group of the Center for Integrated Biology identified the
protein Serinc5, situated on the surface of cells that makes the virus unable to infect new cells. The
infection cannot be propagated because it kills the infected cells. The study seems to find confirmation from
experts from the University of Massachusetts, that analyzed the proteins present in the infectious virus.
We hope that one day a cure will be found and the virus will be destroyed.
