Eyes are the window to the soul and lashes are the alluring frame. It is surprising to see how important lashes have become to women. This fascination goes back to the ancient Egyptians, where women as well as men used ointments to style their lashes. They did this to protect themselves from bad spirits and the women felt that the styling of eyes had an aphrodisiac effect. Roman women were also aware of beauty trends from Egypt and India, and they started to use kohl and burnt cork to darken and thicken their lashes. It may not look like it but Queen Elizabeth in the 16th century would dye her lashes along with her hair and brows in a similar shade. Recent film The Hunger Games took inspiration from this era and even used Paperself lashes in the film to create excitement around the eyes. False lashes and mascara were two innovations brought out in the 20th century. False lashes were used in the first movie productions to give the actresses a more impressive appearance.
