SGGS Careers #NCW2020 Day 2 | Page 16

What and where did you study?

Maths at Bath University and then went on to Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. I was commissioned into the Army Air Corps in August 2014 to train as a helicopter pilot.

What extra-curricular activities were you involved in whilst you were at school?

I was involved with most sports, particularly hockey. I also loved all the musical aspects SGGS had to offer, including the Chamber Choir and Orchestra.

What do you think are the most important skills/qualities to acquire before leaving school?

Self-confidence and the ability to get on with a huge variety of people.

Based on your experiences since leaving SGGS, what advice would you give to SGGS girls interested in pursuing careers in the military?

The military values intelligence, but it is also looking for well-rounded individuals who have experienced more in life than classrooms can offer. Shottery has a fantastically broad range of extra-curricular activities, so try new things! Also, if you want to make life easier for yourself - get fit!

What can you tell us about life in the military?

Life in the military is certainly not a normal 9-5 job. However, since joining the military, I have had the opportunity to travel, compete in competitions at a high level and learn multiple new skills. If you are willing to work hard for what you want to achieve, it is amazing what the military can offer.

What made you choose to become a helicopter pilot?

I joined the Air Cadets at the age of 14 and since then have always thought that having a career in flying would be something rather special. Flying a fixed wing or a helicopter is incredibly challenging but I still cannot believe that someone will pay me money to do something as exciting and fun as flying!
