SGGS Careers #NCW2020 Day 2 | Page 15

What and where are you studying?

I am studying Veterinary Medicine and Science at the University of Nottingham.

What extra-curricular activities were you involved in at school?

I was the House Captain of Cygus house, ran the dissection club, and helped mentor year 11 Biology students with Mrs Edwards.

What were the most important skills you acquired at school?

The most important skills I acquired were probably the importance of hard work and determination - setting a goal and working towards it, but not being afraid to ask for help along the way.

How did you choose your course?

I chose my course by doing a week of work experience in a vet practice and falling in love with the idea of becoming a vet.

What research and preparation did you do when applying?

I researched the universities in the UK offering the course, which ones required which grades/required the BMAT, what kind and what amount of work experience each specified in their entry requirements.

What are the best things about the course?

The best things about the course are the practical sessions - wide variety of live animal handling/examination sessions, different clinical techniques practiced on cadavers and models, and biological and chemical experiments.

Any bad?

The course can be extremely hard as there is an inordinate amount of difficult stuff to learn and be examined on, both in written exams and practicals. It is also 9am-5pm every day (except Wednesday afternoon) so requires a lot of effort.

Have you any advice to SGGS girls who are thinking about university and/or veterinary?

My advice to SGGS girls would be to focus on yourself and what you want to achieve, and try to ignore the pressures of what everyone else is doing/worried about.
