SGGS Careers #NCW2020 Day 1 | Page 2

“Careers” is all too often seen as simply deciding on what you want to do when you leave school or even university. The term “Careers” in school is used by us to encompass so much more than that. No one event or experience will put you on a path to an inevitable end job that you will have for life.

Research by pension companies in the UK has found that of those entering retirement in recent years the average person has had 9 jobs, 1 complete change of career and has moved jobs around every 5 years. The average 40 year old professional worker in the US has held 10 jobs and more than 1 complete change of career and Forrester research predicts that school leavers now will have 12 – 15 jobs in their working life.

“Careers” is simply a term to cover everything that makes up your journey through the part of your life that relates to employment. Finding out about your skills, interests and personal qualities is as much a part of it as finding out about specific jobs that exist in the workplace today and how to access them.

The most important thing is to realise that this is a journey and journeys never go in one straight line. There are twists and turns along the way. There are sights to see and places to press ahead as well as places to pause and take stock. There will even be wrong turns where you have to go backwards in order to get back on the path that you have now realised is the right one.

We hope that this series of e – mags will help you to see what possibilities that journey has for you as an individual.
