Power Forward
Our Hetch Hetchy Water and Power System is an engineering marvel. Water
flows downhill entirely by gravity as it travels 167 miles from Yosemite to 2.6
million people throughout the Bay Area. It passes through our three hydroelectric
powerhouses in the Sierra Nevada, generating 100% greenhouse gas-free
hydroelectric power. This powers all of our City’s vital services, from the airport
to MUNI buses, schools, hospitals, police stations and more. We own and
maintain 60% of the City’s street lights and also provide power to retail and
wholesale customers, such as Treasure Island and The Shipyard.
We have expanded our energy portfolio to include additional sources of clean,
renewable power that can be generated from within the water and wastewater
system—such as our 22 solar arrays located at our municipal facilities and
biogas generation at our wastewater treatment plants.
We also offer incentives to local residents, businesses, and nonprofits to install
solar arrays with GoSolarSF, one of the most successful local solar incentive
programs in the country. Find out more at sfwater.org/solar.
As a not-for-profit public utility, we are accountable to you. Join us in supporting
San Francisco’s clean energy future. Your power dollars are reinvested in our
infrastructure, creating local jobs. Together, we can achieve our City’s climate
action goals.
