By Sian McAllister This summer , I had the opportunity to talk to Carl Zimmer , a New York Times columnist and the author of 13 science books . We discussed the influx of science denial in today ’ s political discourse , the COVID-19 pandemic , the role of science in politics , and genetics .
You studied English literature at university but turned to science writing through your job at Discover magazine . What drew you to science writing ?
I found the job interesting and I liked that I was being paid to learn things that I didn ’ t know about . When I called people up , they were very generous with their time and would tell all sorts of things .
