Welcome to the Second
Edition of Sevenoaks
Catalyst
“ We hope everyone reading this is keeping safe and well-informed during these troubling times.
Here at Catalyst, we have realised that the need to communicate science is greater than ever. As well
as the very pressing issue of the pandemic, the world is becoming more aware of climate change and
the importance of humanity’s relationship with planet Earth. We hope to augment that awareness
through this edition, as well as report on a range of topics related to both Earth and humanity, from
genetics and animal magnetism, to engineering breakthroughs. This edition, unlike our first, will
only be distributed online, apt for an edition named ‘Planet Earth’.
I am pleased to announce that Catalyst has won the Rising Star Award at the 2020 Shine UK
Schools Media Awards. This is an achievement we are all very proud of and I would like to thank
everyone that has worked so hard to get Catalyst off the ground and to keep it going”
— Sian McAllister, Editor in Chief
“This Sevenoaks Catalyst magazine was made during some really challenging times and I am proud of
the Sevenoaks Catalyst team for completing a second edition. I have always been impressed by my
team’s resolute and unwavering determination . I also want to congratulate Lucy Zuo for her
outstanding cover, which serves as a reminder that the student body can contribute to our cause in a
variety of roles.”
— Ryan Chan, Head of Graphic Design
“Launching the Sevenoaks Catalyst Magazine has been extremely rewarding. I was encouraged by my
colleagues’ enthusiasm early on in the publication process. We realised that in today’s world, it’s not only
pursuing science, but also communicating about it effectively, that is important. I am delighted to see that
our entire student body can contribute to our editions, as ethicists, researchers, reporters.
We hope that you can enjoy this edition as much as we loved creating it. We’ve all had to adapt to change
during these unprecedented times, however, we bring this edition to you, with the same aim as that of our
past and future ones too: to promote the understanding of science’s wider relevance in our community. I am
confident that in this day and age, we will truly value the significance of scientific innovation, as it will be a
key driver in our mitigation of the pandemic.”
