Throughout the Visual Arts course , I have focused on my visual response to the built environment . I enjoyed observing and emphasising the stark and bleak features of urban architecture , exploring the relationship between us and our surroundings . I encouraged the contrast of precise building outlines with fluid strokes which I used to create layered textures and scattered explosive marks reflecting the atmosphere which resonated with me . My ink paintings reference the dark , pessimistic , moodiness of London ’ s skyline inspired by John Virtue . My use of ink throughout my other pieces carries this monochromatic murkiness , specifically in my etching prints . Creating these prints involved a previously unexplored process for me , but one which was successful in achieving what I had intended , and also rewarding , as it expanded my confidence in printing .
Experimentation was a crucial element of the process for all my work . I enjoyed mixing different mediums to create an outcome that was exciting and stimulating . Playing with layers , textures and colours allowed me to find techniques that worked or did not work until I felt satisfied , whether I had certain intentions for the outcome or not . This expanded the boundaries for my work and broadened my perspective . The contrast of precision and experimentation fascinated me since the conflict between the two brought complexity and unpredictability to my artwork .
