Tamira Kitchens My art is centred around the theme of the expressive potential of mark making, and the effects that can be achieved by changing the way that marks are made on a surface. As I developed this theme I wanted to expand the potential for multiple interpretations of my art, exploring how I could ensure that every viewer could have a unique experience. I began by creating paintings with an unfinished element, thereby leaving room for interpretation, and by creating paintings in which both my process and the materials used could be seen in the final product. This evolved into a series which altered people’s interpretations of my work by manipulating their experience, either by seeing a changing reflection in it, interacting with it, or seeing it from multiple perspectives. My interest in architecture has fuelled my interest in art which is affected by, and altered for, the people who experience it – in the same way that architecture is a constant progression of ideas and developments used, impacted by, revised and developed for the people who view and use it. I have taken inspiration from the use of space and emptiness to dramatise scenery in Takanori Ogisu’s paintings as well as the energetic mark making and vibrancy in Paul Jenkins’ abstract art.
