Sam’ s Onion Dip – A Fun and Delicious Language Arts Activity In the novel Holes, we read about a character called Sam. Sam was a black onion grower and a natural remedies salesman. He sold onion concoctions that could cure all sorts of illnesses to the people of Green Lake. He loved a woman called Kate Barlow but their love story ended unhappily. After learning about Sam, Kate and Green Lake, we decided to create our own“ onion concoction” and enjoy it while watching a clip from the Holes movie. Our“ onion concoction” was actually an onion dip that can be enjoyed with vegetables or corn or potato chips. We had to chop our own green onions into small pieces and mix them with mayo, yoghurt and spices to create the delicious dip. We loved this activity and because of it we will never forget about Sam or Kate or Green Lake!
THE LANGUAGE ARTS ONION SAM PROJECT
Cem Batu ÖREN
Can you imagine an enormous desert that was actually a gigantic lake 110 years ago? Well, in Holes, there was a lake called Green Lake that dried up and turned into a desolate desert. When Green Lake was a“ lake”, there lived a man called Sam, who made concoctions, syrups, and ointments out of his onions. One of them was for growing hair for bald people, another one was for not getting bitten by yellow-spotted lizards that were deadly. He said that onions were good for everything. If you say how, we can give his donkey as an example. Mary Lou, the donkey, ate nothing but his onions and never got sick! In this project, we tried to follow Sam’ s example and made concoctions out of onions that would cure something normally not curable with normal treatments. We came up with special medicine boxes and posters for them. We even created exclusive advertisements for them! This way, I felt like I was Sam and made concoctions to help other people with their problems. This project also gave us the chance to demonstrate our creativity. Personally, I liked this project because we needed to use our imagination and we didn’ t have a lot of limits to do it. For example, our syrup was called“ Obliviate”, which means to forget, and it’ s for forgetting a particular memory. This memory may be something that affected you badly. Drink 5 ml of it and think or say what you want to forget about for the last 10 seconds. Please scan the QR code on this page and enjoy our advertisement videos! Scanning the QR code will take you to our YouTube page where all the videos are stored. If you like, leave a message and tell us what you think!
