We do a lot of writing in the Language Arts lessons. Students need to practice and perfect their skills by composing journal entries, summaries, essays and letters. Here are some examples of student writing done in connection with the study of the novel Holes by Louis Sachar.
THE CHARACTERS IN HOLES

I would never want to live like the characters I’ m reading about in Holes by Louis Sachar. They all live very unhappy lives. Stanley is the main character and he is always super unlucky. In fact he was so unlucky that he was sent to a place called Camp Green Lake. In Camp Green Lake, the campers are so rude and they make Stanley feel so sad. They are mean to him, too. The poor characters in the book also have to dig a hole every day and it must be 5 feet wide and 5 feet deep. That’ s a really big hole. It’ s their punishment. The characters in the novel also eat bad food, sleep in dirty beds, take very cold and short showers and on top of that have to deal with dangerous animals such as yellow spotted lizards and scorpions. The weather is terrible, too. It is always very hot in the desert. All they do every day is dig holes, every day is the same. The final reason why I would never want to live like the characters in the novel is that the campers didn’ t have a purpose in life. I believe that in order to have a happy life you have to have a goal in your life even it is a small one.
THE CHARACTER I LIKE THE LEAST

In Holes, the character I liked the least was Charles Walker. He was a man who was bossy, cruel, and a person who bragged about himself. People called him Trout Walker because his feet smelled like dead fish. That was due to an illness, he suffered from foot fungus. His father was a rich man. He lived at the same time as Kissin’ Kate Barlow. One of the reasons that I least like Charles Walker was that when he saw Sam and Ms. Katherine kissing inside the schoolhouse, he reported it to the sheriff. After that day, the people of the town killed Sam because he had kissed Ms. Katherine. Another reason that I don’ t like Charles Walker was that he burned Ms. Katherine’ s schoolhouse. When Ms. Katherine rejected the ride on the boat that Charles Walker offered, he became furious. He said that no one says no to Charles Walker and went away. Next day, he burned Ms. Katherine’ s schoolhouse. The last reason that I least like Charles Walker was that he bragged about himself a lot. He especially bragged about his richness. Clearly, I least like the character of Charles Walker in Holes because he was a bossy, cruel, boastful person.
