MY SCHOOL, MY HISTORY
In this unit we continued learning more about our own personal identities by thinking about perspective. To do this, we asked the question:‘ How are Frank Hall and West Hall different?’
We started by thinking about how the present is connected with the past at our school. We talked about how ACI is old and has lots of old buildings, but Frank Hall is new. We also talked about how the old things on our campus have shaped the new things-- like where the paths went, where the gate is, and where the West Hall and English Center buildings are. We could see that everywhere we looked, the present was shaped by the past as things built up.
Then we tried to use what we knew about the school to understand our own selves better. We had to answer the question,‘ How has your own history shaped your experience?‘
When we were talking about this, we realized that most of us went to Frank Hall, but not all of us. We decided to compare Frank Hall to West Hall to help our friends understand our perspective. We also asked them about the schools that they went to before SEV so that they could help use understand their perspective. We decided to go on a walking tour of Frank Hall with our friends so that they would have a better understanding of Frank Hall and all of the places that were special to us there.
‘ When we were talking about our old schools, I started to feel bad for Güz. She didn’ t go to Frank Hall, and I could tell that she was sad when we talked about it. When I asked her, she said that she didn’ t understand some things because she didn’ t go to Frank Hall. I wanted to take her there and show her-- I didn’ t want her to feel left out! I really wanted to show her all of the cool places and my old classroom and teachers there. I miss them! I think taking her to see where we came from made Güz really happy. I think she felt like she was a part of our community and that she understood us better. I liked learning about her old school too!’ Selin Üzümcü 5B 904
At the end of our unit, we wrote a paragraph comparing Frank Hall and West Hall and included photos from our trip with our friends to help show all of the differences we noticed.
