JUST-RIGHT BOOKS
In our Language Arts lessons, we have been learning how reading“ just-right” books helps us to be the best readers we can be! We are learning that we should read books that are not too hard or too easy. We know that books that are too hard or too easy will not help us as much as“ just-right” books do! This year, we are lucky to have many new books in our classroom that are“ just-right” for us. We enjoy reading them during our workshop lessons!
Mina YORGANCILAR Describe a“ just-right” book.“ You need to read a book on your level. Your book should not be too hard, but also not too easy. You can choose your just-right book with the‘ Five Finger Rule.’ Read the first page of your book. If it has more than five hard words, it is not your right book. If it has only 4-5 hard words, it could be your right book!”
Volkan ALTINDAĞ How do you know when a book is too hard?“ If you pick a book, you need to read it’ s first page and if you don’ t understand or you can’ t say it correctly, it is too hard for you. So, if you can’ t say or understand more than five words, it is too hard for you. We shouldn’ t read books that are too hard because we cannot understand what the author wrote about.”
Yılmaz Demir KEÇECİ Describe a“ just-right” book.“ A just-right book is a book at your level. If you cannot read it well, it is not a just-right book for you. You can find your just-right book using an easy way: the‘ Five Finger’ way! If you can read hard and stronger words, it means maybe you need to read harder books.”
Defne KÜRÜM How do you know when a book is too easy?“ You can know a book is too easy for you by reading the first or second page. If you know all of the words and you get so bored from the book, the book is too easy for you. You could also ask your teacher if you are still not sure if the book is too easy for you.”
Büşra GÖNÜLDAŞ How do you know a book when a book is too easy?‘’ I know almost all of the words in the book. I can understand the words and there are lots of pictures in the book. I want to read books that I can feel like I am learning.’’
Ekrem Sarp YÜKSEL Describe“ just-right” books‘’ The grammar level is just-right. It is sometimes easy and sometimes hard to read it. There are new words, but I know most of the words.’’
Leticia Marie DOLOGH Describe“ just-right” books:‘’ The‘ just-right’ book is at our reading level and we understand the words. It is fun for us! We have to like the book and we can choose it, fiction or non-fiction.’’
Pamir Aşil BAYKAL How do you know when a book is too hard?‘’ I know there are more than 5 words I do not know. I don’ t understand sentences. It feels boring and sad.’’
