Changes in Your Appearance
Your body will be different after giving birth . Some changes to your body are temporary , while others may be permanent .
• For the first few weeks , your uterus gradually shrinks . This , along with extra fat stores , will cause your belly to protrude similar to months five to six of pregnancy .
• Your skin has stretched during pregnancy . It may appear more toned over time , but may never look like it did prior to pregnancy .
• The darker line that often forms down the center of the belly in pregnancy ( called the linea nigra ) fades with time .
• Stretch marks often fade , but may not ever disappear completely . You may gain new stretch marks after giving birth from other changes ( such as around your breasts if you experience engorgement ).
• Varicose veins that appeared during pregnancy may improve after birth but persist for some women .

Your partner ’ s help and support can make a big difference in your recovery . It is best for you both to take as much time as possible away from work to be together as a new family . Review the laws in your area concerning medical leave from work , and discuss plans or changes in plans with your employers .
