For North Carolina’s 35-year-old rising star Lealand Sellers better known as Cowboy Elad XIII, getting to work with any one of his many professional his big influences, is like a fairy tale come true. Having to yet work with major labels or producers he still concentrates on delivering his best with the upcoming album: The Diary of Dorian Grey, due out in 2013. “The fact that Cowboy Elad XIII was willing to give his all in his music and life is an incredible testimony his song 'Sky High” written from personal experiences says a lot about his personality,” Fans have said that his rocker like appearance and hip hop style make him a universal symbol in the music industry.
Cowboy Elad XIII describes his own music as painful memories and at the same time signifying deep meaning. “Country music is about stories, Rock is about spirit , Rap is about the vibe. I try to present all three forms in my songs. My music will always reflect who I am.”
When asked about his first experience in a Greensboro studio, Cowboy responded, “Everything is always a work in progress. I will never be satisfied with just being good I have to be the best I can be. Can we run it back from the top?”
Cowboy's voice is developed and his studio performance required little to no tuning. That doesn’t mean that Cowboy doesn’t seek constant improvement and constructive criticism in all areas. “You can be a performer and not be an artist, but I am an artist, a writer, and perfectionist. I have spent time studying and researching everything I can about the music industry and becoming an artist. I am not only honing my songwriting skills and guitar and piano playing, but I am also developing my total package including my image and my stage presence, right down to learning how to read a teleprompter if the situation ever arises for me to do so. This isn’t just a dream of mine, this is a goal that I am determined to achieve and I won’t give up.” Cowboy takes and applies all the advice he receives from the all aspects of the music industry professionals he works with.
While Cowboy focus is in hip hop music, he also credits actor and hip hip artist Will Smith as an influential role model to him. “Will was this young star in Hollywood who was able to stay out of trouble at a time when his contemporaries were making headlines in all the wrong ways. I found it inspiring that you can be in the spotlight while maintaining a sense of decency and wholesomeness. I know that everyone has to make their own way and as a single parent I respect that. Deep down I’d rather be known for being the one that others can depend on.”
It is Cowboy’s hope that his music will provide a new means for him to give back to his community. “I would like to give back to my community for teaching me all that I know,” he says, in addition to wanting to give back to other charitable organizations close to his heart such as SADD, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and the March of Dimes.
Having been involved in The Boy Scouts of America, church choir, and various events throughout high school, Cowboy is no stranger to the stage. “I feel at home on stage, so every stage I step foot on becomes my home during that performance,” Cowboy has had the opportunity to perform in a variety of places, from his hometown event center in Greensboro, NC to boardwalks and clubs in Baltimore. “I write all the time so wherever I am I am trying to better myself.”
Cowboy’s career started with a just a simple poem. His brother inspired him to write. In the short 16 years of his brothers life it inspired him to pursue a way of spoken word. After his first poem called The land I once loved it was as they all history from there.
Cowboy has plans to perform on bigger stages. Following his upcoming hometown concert to perform songs from his new album. “I would love to be the success story that inspire others to try to make the most out of life. With God on his side, I can do it and anything is possible.”
