Bake Sale For The Hungry

By: Jackie Arellano

Taylor Hansen, a student in Ms. Turner’s English 2010 class, put together a project that will help and support lots of children struggling with hunger around the world. She worked with the non-profit organization Food For The Hungry that sends money to children around the world struggling with poverty. In this non-profit, people are able to sponsor a child and send money every month for their food expenses.

Taylor decided to bake cookies and sell them in packs to her family and friends to help raise money for her cause. To keep her sales organized, she made a sheet where people could pick out what they wanted to buy and the prices of each item. She sold packs of cookies and brownies. She then had all of the students in the class help package the goodies, make thank you notes for donors and put them all together so that they were ready to be delivered.

She was able to raise a solid amount of money and she is still waiting on more donations. These donations are a big deal to her and all the children that she will be helping because she realized how much something so simple can mean so much to someone else. “I was surprised how generous people were when giving donations,” she says in her self-reflection. Hunger is a big issue around the world but people, like Taylor, who are willing to put time into an organization that will help this issue are the ones who will be making a difference little by little.
