The students created over 10 posters that were distributed throughout the hallways for a period of time. After a couple weeks the posters were removed and Arellano was asked to reflect on the project. She believed that the limitations that were set by the board at East High, prevented from the full potential of the service to be reached, but she was still satisfied with the money they were able to raise. Together Jackie Arellano and Karen Melendez worked to raise over three hundred dollars from the East High community.

On April 19, 2019, the students of the 2010 English class at East High in Salt Lake City Utah, gathered to create posters to raise awareness about measles and rubella, which are deadly viral infections that cause extreme rashes throughout the body. The project was initiated and directed by Jackie Arellano and Karen Melendez. The students began by learning the extremity of the conditions linked to rubella and measles, all of which can be easily prevented through vaccinations.

Arellano continued explaining through a presentation the statement and goals of the Red Cross, specifically regarding the protection of all children from rubella and the measles. The “Measles and Rubella Initiative,” works globally in partnership with the Red Cross to collect resources, usually money, that can help create a world free of the deadly diseases. Jackie Arellano is working with the Red Cross as a volunteer, amongst a group of teenagers attending a variety of high schools.

Specifically at East High School, Arellano goal was to “raise awareness, as well as funds because it has the potential to save lives of young children.” She coordinated with Karen Melendez to determine their intentions, regarding how to inform the school of the service opportunity. Arellano and Mendez decided that large well organized posters hung in the most populated places throughout the East High building would be most effective. The 2010 English class spent the entirety of the class period on April 19, to sketch and design posters supporting the donation of any amount of money to the cause. Arellano asked that the posters include the valid cause, persuasive language that supports donations, and images that spike interest from the audience.

While making the posters student and peer of Jackie Arellano, Emma Floisand mentioned that she “appreciated the organization of their project and their way of presenting the information in an entertaining manner.”
