1. Escape response

Approach the fish from behind, attempt to grab its tail. This can be done in a net or as the fish is reviving in the current. If the fish attempts to escape it passes this test and can be released. If the fish doesn’t respond, then it fails and you should proceed to step2.

2. Righting response

Turn or attempt to turn the fish upside down (belly up) in the water. If it resists being turned over (like the largie in this picture) or rights itself within 5 seconds, then it can be released. If a fish does not right itself within 5 seconds, then proceed to step 3.
