My head was pounding… I was struggling to breathe… I should have ordered the hotel room with oxygen… drank more Coca tea… exercised some more…. In my mind I was fighting the dreaded altitude sickness called “soroche” brought on by the lack of oxygen at 4000m above sea level…. 40% less than what I am used to… even fires burn with difficulty at this altitude.
“Fish 11 o’ clock behind rock” the guide salvaged me from my miserable mind maze. I delivered a Sunday best cast… lines fly impressively through the air at this altitude… the fly bounced against the rock and into the mouth of the Andean trout…. Game-on… tail-walking on this glazier fed crystal clear lake.
