Day 13-14

These two days were spent at Semonkong and was filled with some fishing, some beers and and meeting new people in and around the lodge and pubs including an English lady (don't you dare). The next day we would be greeting Semonkong.

Day 15

Semonkong did not have any available campsites for the evening so we decided to move on and head towards Qacha's nek - awesome scenery but horrible speedbumps.

We stopped at one of the small towns to look for food but everything was closed an it was 31st of December. We found an old woman that offered us yesterday's chicken and cold pap...it ended up being very tasty with the bonus that all that and a beer cost R70.

Just before Qacha's Nek we turned off towards Sehlabathebe we drove on this road at 30-40 km/h for 94 km to the lodge. The road was mixed with good and bad patches but it was stunning following the border of Lesotho and SA.

We got to Sehlabathebe lodge and booked in at about 6 pm. No electricity at this lodge. The nights here were quite cold too but having a roof over your head helps a lot!

The lodge and the park are so stunning wish I could have spends more time there.

It was a so disappointing to drive next to the Tsoelike and Senqu River and there was no water in it to fish. The Senqu was brown muddy water.

We turned away from the Senqu River at St Francis Mission and followed the Tsoelike River the chalet cost us R500 for the night.

So the New Year starts....

We started early with the river looking good but everyone we spoke to said there were no fish in the river.

We took the road to Mashai which went through the Matabeng (Pass 2930m 4x4 grade 3). It was challenging at times but the view was breath-taking. We got to the top of Matabeng pass and then started the downhill. I would say even more challenging than the up.

We continued along the river and finally found another self-proclaimed campsite paying some locals R100 to use the “facilities”. Still surrounded by stunning views – what a day to start the new year.
