For the last part of our trip we headed down to the middle Malibamatso River, upstream from Katse. We used the road past the Kao Diamond Mine. It’s a spectacular 60 km long semi-decent dirt road that leads you past a massive opencast mine that cuts into the basalt cliffs, on the way towards the village of HaLejone at Katse’s inlet.

We decided on a detour to try and drive up the valley to where the lower Motete River joins the Malibamatso. After a late afternoon fishing session on the Motete, where we got the first yellows of the trip, we dragged ourselves up the mountain side realising that we need to find a place to camp for the night.

With only an hour of daylight light left, salvation came in the form of a US-Aid adorned double cab from a nearby clinic. The driver suggested we camp at the clinic at Motete village, which at that stage sounded as good a plan as any.
