Fly fishing trip report - Lesotho and the berg, 27-30 April 2017 by Alfie Röhrs
Every now and then Nic has this knack to convince me to go on random, last minute fishing trip. This April he succeeded again when he swayed Brani and I to join him for a bit of late season small stream fishing. Then (as usual) things got complication... I convinced myself that the fishing will be super-hot high up in Lesotho while Nic already had plans to go to the Cathedral Peak area.
Eventually compromises were reached with me and Brani heading to Oxbow lodge in Lesotho for two days before joining Nic in Cathedral Peak.
This would give him time to spend some quality time with the missus and do some blanking scouting around the area’s two rivers before we pitch up.
Brani and I hit the Lesotho border just before nine on Thursday morning. Getting through the border at Caledonspoort was quicker and easier than ordering a bucket of drumsticks from a KFC drive-through. Before we knew it, we were at the base of the spectacular Moteng Pass, well on our way to Oxbow Lodge, which is 65km form the border.
The pass is one of five or so spectacular tarred road passes in Lesotho that just dwarfs anything in South Africa. Even though it climbs 1400 meters to 2820m above sea level, you can easily attempt this pass in a family sedan. We reached Oxbow well before lunch - in all the lodge is 440km from Pretoria.
“Look at me, I’m on top of the world with my fancy diplomatic passport” ...pity we could not wake up the official at diplomatic cue, just had to live it up with the common people ;-)
