Beach Volleyball ’ s Oldest Tourney to Hit The Sand This Weekend
By Clara Beard | LB Indy Since 1955 , Laguna ’ s Main Beach has been the backdrop for the Laguna Open , the longest-running beach volleyball tournament in history . From Sept . 9 to 11 , players will meet on the sand for a three-day men ’ s and women ’ s open competition , the fan-favorite “ Battle of the Beaches ,” pitting four historic Laguna volleyball beaches against each other in a four-person battle , and the highly anticipated Saturday evening beach party .
The tournament is held in partnership with the California Beach Volleyball Association and the Association of Volleyball Professionals .
Laguna Beach local and winner of Olympic gold at the 2000 Sydney games , Dain Blanton , will be in the announcer ’ s booth alongside beach legends Sinjin Smith , Randy Stoklos and Dane Selznick . Smith and Stoklos are the most successful winning pair in pro beach history .

Laguna Residents Form New PAC Against Measure Q
Citizens for Laguna ’ s Future Officially Launches No On Q Campaign

A group of Laguna Beach business owners , residents and local leaders have formed a new political action committee to campaign against Measure Q , a ballot measure designed by Laguna Residents First PAC requiring a public vote on major developments along Coast Highway and Laguna Canyon Road .
Recently launched as Citizens for Laguna ’ s Future , the PAC stated in a press release that , if passed , Measure Q would , “ create a dragnet effect that would require costly , citywide elections for both large and small public and private projects , not only ‘ overdevelopment ’ as claimed by Q supporters .”
“ The cost to the City , and therefore Laguna taxpayers , could be millions , cutting critical funding for police and fire , and stunting the financial viability of Laguna ,” the release continued .

Before Laguna Beach resident Greg MacGillivray was nominated for Academy Awards for his IMAX films “ Dolphins ” and “ The Living Sea ,” before he managed to haul a huge , heavy camera up an icy mountain slope to film scenes for the IMAX film “ Everest ,” before he went to Hollywood and worked on such films as Stanley Kubrick ’ s “ The Shining ,” surf culture ruled his life .
He and longtime friend Jim Freeman formed MacGillivray Freeman Films in
1963 and began shooting 16mm surfing films , which captured the surf culture in cinematic time capsules , culminating in 1972 with their final surf movie , “ Five Summer Stories ,” widely acknowledged
