Feel it in the air ? The sun is setting sooner . Pumpkin Spice & Apple Cinnamon everything is on the shelf . Kids are packing up their backpacks and their parents are smiling … Your canine friends are sensing change , too . This time of year , when there ’ s football practice , dance class , and squeezing in a quick supper , your pets are suddenly feeling the loss of those warm kids to snuggle with late in the morning . Everyone ' s busy and it ’ s so quiet . For dogs , this is the season of Separation Anxiety . Some dogs struggle more than others . Maybe they bark or chew while you ’ re gone . Maybe you have to put them in a kennel to keep them safe . Here are ways to make things easier on your pup : 1 ) Leave them with something fun to do . Try a frozen KONG with surprise yummies to get to . Get recipes online for stuffing . Freezing them makes them last long , keeping your friend busy and his mind occupied while you ’ re gone . 2 ) Give that pup a good run before you go . You may be in a hurry to get to work and school , but imagine how you hate sitting behind that desk all day with no time to stretch … That ’ s how your pup feels , all cooped up in the house . 3 ) It ' s quiet while you ' re gone ! Leave a radio or TV on during the day . This can mask some scary outside sounds . 4 ) Teach your dog about being alone . Start your puppy out with short periods of time being apart . Some dogs can ’ t bear to be apart from their owners for even a few minutes . Play hide and seek . Hide in another area and when your pup settles down , go calmly back to her and tell her what a GOOD GIRL she is , and you like it when she is relaxed . 5 ) Teach her how to relax by being relaxed yourself . When you leave in the morning , if you are going to kennel your dog , do so a few minutes or a half hour before you leave . Let her calm down before you leave . No long , sad goodbyes . Just a quick " See ya later " and out the door , like when you ' re playing hide and seek . 6 ) Your dog can ' t tell time . They do sense when it ’ s time for you to come home . But maybe you have a late meeting , or an earlier sunset is throwing off their instincts . When you get home they are so happy to see you ! And they make you feel fantastic , because , frankly , no one at work was this excited about you today . RESIST THE URGE to party with your buddy . Greet him calmly and expect him to be calm . If we have a hug and cuddles party with jumping and yipping , we teach them to anticipate that our return will be SUPER EXCITING ! Therein lies the problem . Your pup begins anticipating the party earlier and earlier . He stares at the door and you don ' t come through . This freaks him out and he gets anxious . So now he is so freaked out he chews his way out of the crate and eats your favorite shoes because that ' s as close as he can get to that great smell of yours . Don ’ t believe me ? Come in the house super calm and ignoring that happy pup until he settles down . ( I know it is KILLING you !) You ' re just going to have to trust me on this one . Give it a week . I think you will see that your dog will handle separation better if you can just set a calm tone leaving in the morning and returning at night .
