A Note From The Editor:
It ' s truly remarkable how the love of sports and animals bring people together who might have little else in common. The loyalty bestowed upon a favorite team or pet crosses boundaries of age, background, culture, and circumstance. That ' s why it ' s so smart to use this connection to help more homeless pets find their forever families. It ' s exciting to see this idea get more traction, as several national sports teams have now made it a regular part of their season. This summer, the Philadelphia Phillies teamed up with the Pennsylvania SPCA to host " Save a Pet at the Park." Adoptable puppies, dogs, cats, and kittens were brought to Citizens Bank Park and players met and showcased the shelter pets before the game, giving them tremendous exposure through the team ' s enormous audience. In December, the Philadelphia Flyers launched a " Hockey and Hounds " program, where team members carry adoptable pets into their arena before the game. They also feature one adoptable dog every month from local rescues on their social media pages, website, and game promotions. Last year, the Philadelphia Eagles launched their " Dawg Mentality " campaign, teaming up with several shelters to pay the fees for prospective adopters. How many more pets could find their homes if this idea was embraced and implemented by local sports teams? One appearance on the field during the game and some photos on social media could put a shelter pet in front of hundreds of potential adopters. Sports have such a unique ability to bring communities together. Combining that influence with a mission to help animals could have a tremendous impact. By giving local shelter pets a place in the spotlight, our hometown teams could help turn fans into adopters, giving so many deserving animals a chance to become part of a family. Interested?
