Ask Greta

Dear Greta,
I dread this time of year because my kid doesn ' t only dislike school, she actually has a lot of anxiety about going. Home schooling is not an option for us. What can I do to calm her fears?
- Worried Mom
Dear Worried Mom,
School anxiety is common, especially when children are starting a new school, a new grade, or facing changes in their routine. The first step is to listen without immediately trying to fix the problem. Ask your child what worries them and reassure them that their feelings are understandable. Establishing a predictable morning and bedtime routine can also help. Prepare backpacks, clothes, and lunches the night before so mornings feel less rushed. Familiarity can make an unfamiliar environment feel less intimidating. Try to focus on the positive aspects of school rather than repeatedly asking whether your child is worried. Help them identify something they can look forward to, such as seeing a friend, participating in a favorite activity, or enjoying lunch with classmates. Teach simple calming techniques, such as taking slow, deep breaths, counting to five, or imagining a peaceful place. Most importantly, remain calm and confident when saying goodbye. A lengthy or emotional farewell can sometimes make separation more difficult. If anxiety is persistent, interferes with sleep or eating, causes frequent physical complaints or prevents your child from attending school, talk with the teacher, school counselor, or pediatrician. Additional support can make a significant difference.
