- Understanding Cellulitis-

Cellulitis is a common but potentially serious skin infection. This bacterial infection affects the deeper layers of the skin and the soft tissue beneath it. Although it may begin as a small area of redness or tenderness, cellulitis can spread quickly and become serious if it is not treated promptly.
The infection usually develops when bacteria enter the body through a break in the skin. A cut, scrape, insect bite, surgical incision, cracked or peeling skin, or an area affected by eczema can provide an opening for bacteria. In some cases, however, the entry point may be so small that it is difficult to identify.
Cellulitis most often occurs on the lower legs, but it can develop anywhere on the body. Common symptoms include redness, swelling, warmth, tenderness, and pain. The affected area may expand over time, and the skin may appear tight or shiny. Some people also experience fever, chills, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, or red streaks extending away from the infected area.
Because cellulitis can resemble other conditions, such as an allergic reaction, inflammation, or a blood clot, a medical evaluation is important. A healthcare professional may diagnose cellulitis by examining the skin and reviewing the person’ s symptoms and medical history. In many cases, laboratory tests or imaging are not necessary, although they may be used if the infection is severe or the diagnosis is uncertain.
Treatment generally involves antibiotics. Mild cases may be treated with oral medication, while more serious infections may require intravenous antibiotics or hospital care. It is important to take antibiotics exactly as prescribed and complete the full course, even if symptoms begin to improve. Resting and elevating the affected limb may help reduce swelling and discomfort.
Certain people may have a greater risk of developing cellulitis, including those with diabetes, poor circulation, weakened immune systems, chronic swelling, or recurring skin problems. Preventive measures include keeping the skin clean and moisturized, promptly washing and covering cuts, avoiding scratching insect bites, and treating conditions such as athlete’ s foot or cracked skin between the toes.
Anyone who develops rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, a high fever, confusion, dizziness, or red streaks should seek medical attention promptly. Cellulitis is often successfully treated when recognized early, but delaying care can allow the infection to spread to deeper tissues or, in rare cases, into the bloodstream.
Early recognition, proper treatment, and careful skin care can help prevent complications and support a full recovery.
