Kindergarten Camp: A Bridge to Starting School
For the past five years, Jersey Shore Area School District has been able to offer incoming kindergarten students a two-week camp to help ease the transition to starting school. It is an optional program for enrolled kindergarten students. Although the camp is hosted at Jersey Shore Elementary School, students may attend Avis Elementary and Jersey Shore Elementary School. This year’ s camp ran from July 20th- July 30th, Monday- Thursday, from 8:30- 11:30am.
Five of the district’ s seven kindergarten teachers led the camp: Mrs. Nicole Bailey, grade level leader, Ms. Samantha Bailey, Mrs. Eiswerth, Mrs. Gehr, and Mrs. Karstetter. Mrs. Bailey shared that 64 students registered for the program this year. Kindergarten camp is an opportunity to have a mini-kindergarten day without anyone else in the building. Students become familiar with the school and with some of the kindergarten routines, including eating in the cafeteria and using the primary playground at recess.
The district has realized that providing this opportunity relieves the anxiety surrounding school for their youngest Bulldogs and their parents and caregivers. A wonderful way to form positive home-school relationships!
Since offering the program, the teachers and administrators see more smiles and less tears on the first day of school!
