Tip # 4: Eat Smart. In recent years, researchers have also developed dietary recommendations aimed specifically at promoting brain health. In 2015, a research team at Rush University Medical Center led by Martha Clare Morris published early findings on the Mediterranean- DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay diet, better known as the MIND diet. Building on previous work surrounding the Mediterranean and DASH diets, researchers identified foods most strongly associated with healthy brain aging.
The MIND diet emphasizes leafy greens, fruits, whole grains, healthy fats, beans, and lean proteins while limiting foods associated with poorer cardiovascular and metabolic health. Like exercise and sleep, diet appears to influence brain health gradually over time, meaning that small consistent choices may matter more than dramatic short-term changes.
As science continues to advance, researchers will likely uncover even more ways to support healthy brain aging. The encouraging reality is that many of the strategies already supported by decades of evidence are relatively accessible. Regular movement, quality sleep, social connection, and balanced nutrition do not require expensive equipment or risky treatments. While aging is inevitable, there is growing evidence that we have more influence over long-term brain health than people once believed.
Our thanks to Dr. Alexandra Paz. Aly received her B. S. in Biology from St. Bonaventure University and her Ph. D. from Florida Atlantic University, where she studied the evolution and genetic basis of behavior. She now works fulltime in science communication as a postdoctoral fellow with the community outreach team at Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute, helping connect neuroscience research with the broader community.
