“ Ring to Red Carpet ,” July
So excited to see this piece come to life in the July issue of Rhode Island Monthly ! Here ’ s the backstory : I flipped on the latest season of True Detective and saw this badass woman playing opposite Jodie Foster and thought , “ Who is that ?” Not only is she a born and bred Rhode Islander , but she ’ s a former WBA / IBO / WBO Super Lightweight Champion and a proud member of the Seaconke Wampanoag Tribe who also celebrates her Cape Verdean heritage . When we sat down for our Zoom interview , I was struck by her authenticity , her raw truth , and her reverence for the people , the tribe and the community that raised her . It ’ s clear that as her star continues its meteoric rise , she ’ ll never forget the place she calls home . Thank you , Kali Reis , for your generous time and @ jamiecoelho and @ danaraelaverty at @ rimonthly for bringing the story to life .

I could relate to just about every item you listed in your July column . Two of
them stood out because they were a part of my childhood , too .
1 . Fries from Burger Chef in East Providence .
I always had a place in my heart for that Burger Chef on Newport Avenue . In an odd sort of way , I suppose I was rooting for the underdog , especially as all the McDonald ’ s and Burger Kings emerged on the scene . I was so disappointed when it closed .
2 . Your trips to Vienna Bakery and eating half the bread before you got home .
Well , for me it was Treglia ’ s Market on North Broadway in East Providence ( a few hundred yards from Asquino ’ s ). This was one of the first places I went on my own for my mom . The Treglias were so nice and would often send me home with a big bone for our dog ! I would also get a loaf of Italian bread and like you , would eat a good chunk of it on the way home . This became a running joke with my mom .

Just for the record , the gift shop at Kent Hospital really is nice . When my dad was there during his last weeks , my mother , who loved to shop , did her entire Christmas shopping there while getting a muchneeded break from his bedside . I still wear the beautiful earrings she bought me over five years ago as a symbol of their last Christmas gift to me together .
Thank you to the volunteers who run that nice gift shop and bring some comfort to those going through such difficult times . Sometimes retail therapy does help ! Good and fun to read article !
