A Note From The Editor :
Dogs made the news quite a bit this past month ! Did you hear about the Dutch swimmer , Sharon Van Rouwendaal , who credited her Pomeranian , Rio , with helping her win Olympic gold in Paris this summer ? The athlete was so distraught when her beloved 8 year old dog died , she lost her incentive and didn ' t swim for weeks . It wasn ' t until her dad suggested she swim for Rio that she was motivated to continue . Van Rouwendaal made headlines , not just for winning the 10 kilometer open water marathon , but for dedicating the medal to her deceased dog , and showing how much pets can give our life purpose .
Then there was the story of the Blair County family whose pet went missing for three weeks . Not only did many people in her community go on searching expeditions for the 3 year old English Mastiff , the posts on social media were shared hundreds of times , and one business owner even put up a thousand dollar reward out of her own pocket for the dog ' s return . After a tip from a neighbor , the family not only found Darcy in the woods , they found two other dogs with her , a terrified Pug and Boxer . After a futile search for the owners , it was determined the two were probably dumped . But the tale gets better - the newly named Sheldon ( Pug ) and Bailey ( Boxer ) are now part of Darcy ' s family !
And here ' s a story still looking for a happy ending ... an explosive detection dog named Csonti recently retired , and was placed with a non-profit organization in Pennylvania . Unfortunately , it was discovered that he was actually being badly neglected . Csonti was rescued and placed with the Pennsylvania SPCA in Philadelphia . He ' s a hero that spent over half his life serving our country , protecting a U . S . Embassy overseas . Could you be his ? If you have experience working with dogs trained in military or police work , please contact gkocher @ pspca . org , and give Csonti the retirement he truly deserves !
