Dear Greta ,
This great girl I ' ve been dating just invited me on a camping trip . Frankly , there is nothing I would like to do less . I hate camping , and I won ' t know anyone but her . The trip is three days with 6 of her frinds , including her ex-boyfriend , so I worry that it won ' t look right if I decline . Can I skip this without it being a big deal , or would it be a mistake to miss the trip ?

I ' m right there with you , City Boy . My idea of camping is waiting for our room to be ready in the lobby of a hotel or watching the Discovery Channel on TV . But I understand your problem . It ' s a bad idea to stay home when it means she ' ll be out there alone and looking single to her ex making her feel resentful . Unfortunately , this is probably more than a simple camping trip - she is probably anxious to see how you fit in with her friends , and whether or not the two of you can share and enjoy one another ' s hobbies . Let your girlfriend know that camping isn ' t really your thing , but you ' re going to give it a try . This sets her up to not expect you to be an outdoorsy type , but she ' ll see you as a good sport who ' s willing to go out of his way to make her happy . Going on the trip may also mean she ' ll be receptive to share in your interests that might not necessarily be her thing . Good luck !
