NEW DOG RULES

New regulations for dogs entering Canada

by Kerry Whipp President North Dakota Wildlife Federation

My wife and I lived in Kenmare , ND from 1999 – 2001 before moving to the Jamestown area . Neither of us wanted to leave Kenmare . We had good friends , we enjoyed the community , hunting and fishing opportunities were limitless , and we were only miles from the Canada border .
There was something about living near the border that was a novelty , and I got a kick out of telling family and friends back home . Their reactions were entertaining , as if I was living in this far away Arctic world . On a few occasions we would drive into Canada to explore , do some shopping . There was a pizzeria in Estevan we enjoyed . I regret never venturing north

Back then , traveling to and from Canada wasn ’ t much different then driving to Minot to go grocery shopping . No hassles , just a brief stop at the North Portal border crossing and we were on our way . I would always take my dog along , which was never an issue as long as I remembered vaccination records . Since then , things have changed , and they are about to get a whole lot more complicated .
New Federal regulations took affect August 1 that will directly impact travelers crossing the border with their canines . This new regulation is a joint effort of the U . S . Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , and the U . S . Department of Agriculture to curb rabies transmission . Here ’ s a check list of the new regulations , but I advise going to the CDC website for more detailed information .
• Verify dog will be at least 6 months old on day of travel back to the U . S .
• Get your pet micro-chipped or have your veterinarian verify their microchip number . Make sure the microchip number is listed on all veterinary records .
• Visit veterinarian to get your dog their rabies vaccination ( or booster ) before travel .
• Your dog must be at least 12 weeks ( 84 days ) old when it gets its first rabies vaccination .
• Make sure your dog ’ s rabies vaccination will be valid ( not expired ) for the entire duration of travel .
• Contact your veterinarian to have them complete either the Certification of U . S . -Issued Rabies Vaccination form , or the USDA

endorsed export health certificate if your dog will be only in dog rabies-free or low-risk countries and will return from the country listed on the certificate or that documents a valid rabies vaccination issued in the United States .
• Print a copy of the Certification of U . S . -Issued Rabies Vaccination form or USDA APHIS-endorsed export health certificate from USDA .
• Take a photo of your dog and complete the CDC Dog Import Form . This form requires you to upload a picture of your dog showing its face and body . Dogs that will be less than one year of age at time of return to the U . S , should have the photograph taken within 10 days before travel .
• Ensure you enter your dog ’ s microchip number into this form correctly . Very important .
