Now use your ‘ medium ’ shade of buttercream to repeat Steps 4 through to 7 . Use creative judgement to decide where you would like any patches of darker or lighter shade buttercream mellowed by the medium colour . This is where the magic happens ! When the ‘ medium ’ shade ( which is the same shade as the cakes coverage ) crosses over the layers of lighter / darker buttercream , it creates a textural layer that will also blend beautifully back into the cakes original coverage . Feel free at this stage to add an additional accent colour , applied sparingly using the same technique . I ' ve done this with a shade of lemon to enhance the overall colour scheme , as well as create greater cohesion with my decorative elements .
