Continue to stack each layer of cake with buttercream using the angled spatula .

Smooth out the sides and apply a thin crumb coat of buttercream over the whole cake . You do not need to worry about creating a neat finish or sharp edges for this design . Measure the height of your stacked cake in preparation for designing the rainbow template .
