" Solving problems is an apt job description that applies to everyone in property management ."
BOARD PERSPECTIVE

2021 Has Been the Year of " Never Bored "

Everyone gets the question , “ How are you doing ?” It is a fine question , showing some amount of concern about the wellbeing of the other person . When someone asked me this question , I used to reply , “ Good , how are you ?”

It was in the year 2021 that my response to the question “ How are you ?” became “ Never bored .” As an attorney who represents landlords and managers , this is a much more accurate answer for me , and , I imagine , a more accurate answer for many people who worked in or around property management during the past year .
For starters , we ’ ve grappled first with the CARES Act , then the CDC eviction moratorium , which was extended multiple times . Then it expired . Then it was reinstated , only to be ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court .
We ’ ve had Governor Polis ’ constant executive orders regarding tenant-landlord interaction . Every month , a guessing game as to what new requirements will be imposed upon the industry . On top of keeping up with this added regulation on the federal and local level , we ’ ve had to reckon with the state legislature proposing – and passing – two laws that will significantly impact our industry long into the future .

" Solving problems is an apt job description that applies to everyone in property management ."

It ’ s been a challenging year , certainly , and suffice it to say , I have never felt bored as I have helped our clients wade through all these changes . However , the mantra “ Never Bored ” is an accurate description of what it is always like to represent landlords , and really , it can apply to almost everyone in the world of property management .
My day-to-day goals are always to help someone solve a problem . Solving problems is an apt job description that applies to everyone in property management . Whether you handle leasing , work through maintenance issues , or make decisions for how your company operates , we are all solving problems . Problems that those outside of the industry may have a hard time imagining actually happen .
We are the folks who get to solve the dispute between upstairs and downstairs neighbors that are escalating to new levels , or that unfortunate situation involving nudity . We have the lucky role of trying to interpret which local or federal agency is developing a new requirement that impacts how property managers do their jobs . If you are one of the good people that manages property , or maintains property , you are trying to solve these problems daily , for the benefit of your community .
While surely there are days that go by in the world of property management that do not involve a unique scenario , those are not the situations that come across my desk , and that is just fine with me .
So here is an invitation : the next time someone asks how you are doing , tell them you are “ Never Bored ” and then regale them with one of your many adventures in property management . They may or may not believe you , but they will certainly gain a new appreciation for what you do . While serving in property management may not be something that interests everyone , those who have tenure in this industry know the real secret to working in the world of property management . It can be rewarding , challenging , and , of course , never boring .
